Computer Networks

Course Descriptions:

The objective of this course is to gain an understanding of the concepts and techniques used to model and implement communications between processes residing on independent host computers. The course examines the conceptual framework for specifying a computer network – the network architecture, and investigates the set of rules and procedures that mediate the exchange of information between two communicating processes – the network protocols. The course is to enable students to set up a functional network at least for small and medium offices and understand the ideas behind. The course is to enable students to administer a Windows 2000/2003 network environment through sessions covered in the lab that covers details of Managing a Network, Network Security, Sharing and Securing Resources, Using TCP/IP in the Network and basic UTP based LAN infrastructure installation. The course will also serve as a beginning point to start career development certifications in Cisco, Microsoft and Network+. The topics included are:  Introduction to Networking, Network Standards and Terminologies, Network Media and Topologies, Connectivity Devices, Network Architectures (Ethernet), The TCP/IP Protocol

Objectives:

At the end of the course students are expected to achieve the following:

  1. Be familiar with the basics of data communication;
  2. Be familiar with various types of Networks;
  3. Understand the layered approach that makes design, implementation and operation Computer Networks possible;
  4. Understand the detailed characteristics of the different Network media;
  5. Be familiar with the operation and configuration of Network connectivity devices.
  6. Be familiar with Network performance enhancement techniques through the study of Network Architectures;
  7. Understand the protocols of the TCP/IP Suite and design functioning Internetworks based on this Protocol Suite;
  8. Set up a functional Network from scratch at least for small and medium offices.
